The Labour Party’s Diaspora Directorate has refuted claims linking the party and its 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to the upcoming EndBadGovernance protest. The Directorate labeled such reports as unfounded and baseless.

In a statement signed by Amb. AJU Elumelu, Deputy Director (Diaspora), Head of Media and Communications Directorate of Mobilization and Integration, the Labour Party emphasized its commitment to peace and lawful conduct. “Our record, especially following the last general election, highlights our dedication to peaceful and constructive engagement in Nigeria’s political landscape. We have always prioritized the rule of law and encouraged our supporters to do the same,” Elumelu stated.

The party acknowledged the constitutional right of Nigerians to protest but clarified that any such protest is an independent exercise of democratic rights, not orchestrated by the Labour Party or any opposition party. “Historical examples from Kenya, Egypt, and other nations show that popular protests arise from people’s direct response to their experiences with governance,” the statement noted.

The Directorate condemned recent attempts by individuals, including Bayo Onanuga, to link the EndBadGovernance protest to the Labour Party and Peter Obi. “Such statements are misleading and dangerous, as they incite division and unrest. The Labour Party believes in responsible and truthful communication, especially in these sensitive times,” Elumelu asserted.

The statement urged government representatives to avoid inflammatory and unfounded accusations, emphasizing the need for constructive dialogue and positive policy changes to address Nigeria’s challenges. “The Labour Party remains committed to Nigeria’s progress through constructive opposition and sound policies. We call on all Nigerians to remain peaceful, law-abiding, and focused on collective efforts to build a better nation,” Elumelu concluded.
