In a surprise move, the Governing Council of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, has sacked the institution’s Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Joseph Ikechebelu, without giving any reason. This decision was announced in a letter signed by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairperson of the council, Gregory Mbadiwe.

The council has appointed Professor Carol Arinze-Umobi as the new Acting Vice-Chancellor, effective Monday, July 22, 2024. Her appointment is for six months, in accordance with the university’s act.

Earlier on Saturday, soldiers stormed the university premises before the council’s meeting, causing apprehension among students.

Professor Ikechebelu was appointed Acting Vice-Chancellor in early June, replacing Professor Charles Esimone, whose tenure expired on June 3.
