The Labour Party’s leadership has expressed deep sorrow over the sudden passing of Dr. Doyin Okupe, the former Director-General of its 2023 Presidential Campaign. Speaking in Abuja on Friday, National Chairman Comrade Julius Abure described the loss as a profound shock to the party.

According to Abure, the physician-turned-politician, who died at 72 after a protracted illness suspected to be cancer, played a crucial role in Nigerian politics long before his association with the Labour Party. He recalled Okupe’s earlier tenure as National Publicity Secretary of the National Republican Convention, his detention under General Sani Abacha, and subsequent disqualification from participating in United Nigeria Congress Party primaries, as well as his service as a senior adviser to former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Abure emphasized that Okupe’s dynamic involvement in the party’s 2023 presidential push showcased his inspirational leadership and unwavering belief in a new Nigeria. Notably, before being appointed the campaign’s Director-General, Okupe had served as a placeholder for the vice presidential candidacy—a role he stepped aside from, prioritizing regional balance within the party.

Described as lively, energetic, honest, and creative, Okupe was a team player whose statesmanship and bold political stance left an indelible mark on his colleagues. Even after resigning his party membership last year on principle, his bond with Labour Party members remained unbroken, as he continued to offer valuable advice.

“We cherished his short but impactful association with the party leadership,” Abure said, adding that Nigeria has lost an astute politician whose passion for a great nation was undeniable. He extended heartfelt condolences to Okupe’s family, the Ogun State government, and Nigerians nationwide, praying for a well-deserved rest for the late strategist.
