There was heavy security around Wadata Plaza in Abuja — the national headquarters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) — on Monday, as tensions over the party’s leadership crisis led to two separate, rival meetings being held.
Officers from both the Nigeria Police and the Civil Defence Corps were deployed in large numbers to keep order and stop any possible clashes. The area was barricaded, and only people with proper clearance were allowed into the building.
The crisis centers on decisions made by the Acting National Chairman, which some in the party, including the Board of Trustees (BoT), have criticized as unconstitutional and made without proper consultation. This disagreement has deepened existing divisions within the PDP.
The two meetings — one a National Executive Committee (NEC) session and the other an expanded caucus gathering — were expected to happen around the same time, with each side pushing to take control and prove its legitimacy.
The security presence reflects how serious the internal conflict has become, as the party continues to struggle with unity and direction. With the 2027 elections getting closer, many believe that if the PDP doesn’t resolve its internal problems soon, it could lose its place as a major opposition force.
More details will be shared as the situation unfolds.
