President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been conferred with the title of Knight Commander of the Order of Saint Lucia (KCOSL)—the Caribbean nation’s highest national honour—in recognition of his efforts to strengthen ties between Africa and the Caribbean.
The honour was announced on Monday by the government of Saint Lucia in a post on X, stating that the Governor General had officially bestowed the knighthood on Tinubu, who is currently on an official visit to the island nation.
“My visit to Saint Lucia is in keeping with the ideal of building the bridge between Africa and the Caribbean and creating a pathway to deepen economic ties and foster mutual cooperation,” Tinubu said while addressing a joint session of Saint Lucia’s Senate and House of Assembly.
He described Nigeria and Saint Lucia as “bound by history, culture, and common aspirations,” and pledged his administration’s commitment to strengthening cooperation in trade, investment, education, tourism, and cultural exchange.
In a reciprocal show of diplomatic intent, the Saint Lucian government confirmed plans to formalise bilateral relations with Nigeria, including the introduction of a visa waiver arrangement for holders of diplomatic and official passports from both Nigeria and OECS (Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States) member states.
Saint Lucia also announced that Nigeria would offer scholarships to OECS citizens and extend the Nigerian Technical Aid Corps (TAC)—a diplomatic volunteer programme—to countries in the region.
The honour and high-level talks signal a deepening alignment between West Africa’s largest economy and the Caribbean, both of which are increasingly seeking to forge closer ties built on shared cultural heritage, economic opportunity, and postcolonial solidarity.
