Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has said that political leaders are responsible for Nigeria’s failure to achieve self-sufficiency in food production. Speaking at a lecture to mark his 86th birthday in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Obasanjo expressed concern that Nigeria and Africa had not taken advantage of scientific and technological advancements in agriculture.
He called on Nigerians to hold their leaders accountable for their lack of political will to turn Nigeria into the “food basket of Africa.”
Obasanjo emphasized the importance of food security, saying that until Africa becomes reasonably self-sufficient in food and nutrition security, the continent cannot be doing the right thing for itself.
He called on African leaders to demonstrate political will and take action to address the issue.
