Three children have lost their lives in a tragic shooting incident that occurred at the Covenant School in Nashville, Tennessee.
The city’s fire department reported on Twitter that there were “multiple patients” involved in the incident, which took place at the private Christian school catering to students from pre-school through sixth grade.
The area was declared an active scene as local police engaged with the shooter, who was later pronounced dead.
Local media outlets and ABC reported that three children were taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center with gunshot wounds and were pronounced dead.
The Covenant School is a small institution with approximately 200 students. Local media reported that it had implemented an active shooter program in 2022.
Images shared on social media show students being escorted away from the school by law enforcement officials.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) is participating in the investigation, according to reports.
The House Democratic Caucus in Tennessee issued a statement expressing condolences for the victims and their families, with Chairman John Ray Clemmons calling for thoughts and prayers for the entire school community and surrounding neighborhood.
Nashville mayoral candidate Freddie O’Connell said that the city had now joined other communities that have experienced school shootings.
