Aishatu Dahiru, also known as Binani, the gubernatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Adamawa state, has delivered an acceptance speech after being illegally declared the governor-elect by the resident electoral commissioner (REC).
This announcement comes after the supplementary election held in the state on Saturday.
Mrs. Dahiru’s move is seen as an attempt to upstage the incumbent governor, Ahmadu Fintiri of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who had scored more votes during the substantive election on 18 March.
However, Nigeria’s electoral law states that the REC, Hudu Ari, does not have the authority to announce the winner of the election.
That responsibility lies solely with the state collation officer appointed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The situation has caused controversy and raised questions about the legality of Mrs. Dahiru’s declaration of victory.
