Abuja, Monday – The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Usman Alkali Baba, emphasized the significance of the upcoming May 29 presidential inauguration, asserting its sacrosanct nature.
During a press briefing in Abuja, the IGP cautioned political parties against instigating trouble on this critical day.
Ensuring the protection of democracy, the IGP pledged to collaborate with other security operatives, assuring that every possible measure would be taken.
In light of the recent 2023 General elections, the IGP observed that certain political actors, discontent with the election outcome, have resorted to issuing public threats aimed at disrupting the presidential inauguration ceremony.
The Nigeria Police and the national intelligence community have been actively monitoring the activities of these individuals, as well as other groups that have demonstrated unpatriotic tendencies with the intent to undermine national security interests.
The IGP expressed concern that these elements are pursuing extra-judicial and undemocratic means to sabotage the country’s democratic heritage for their own narrow political gains.
While acknowledging the importance of citizens’ freedom to exercise their electoral rights, the IGP emphasized that the essence of democracy also lies in the right of aggrieved political actors to pursue legal recourse to address their grievances regarding the electoral outcome.
As the country prepares for the May 29 presidential inauguration, the authorities remain vigilant and committed to upholding democratic principles and safeguarding the peaceful transition of power.
