In a recent development, the Nigerian Senate has successfully passed a bill aiming to amend the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) act.

The amendment seeks to impose a two-year imprisonment term, with no option for a fine, on individuals found guilty of submitting false petitions.

Previously, the punishment for such offenses was limited to a fine of N100,000.

On Tuesday, May 30, the amended bill received approval after Abdul Kwari, chairman of the senate committee on anti-corruption, presented a comprehensive report.

Kwari emphasized the necessity of introducing stricter penalties to discourage individuals from misleading the ICPC.

Senate President Ahmad Lawan expressed his support for the amended bill, stating that it would serve as a deterrent for potential offenders.

He further highlighted that the implementation of these measures would bolster the ICPC’s effectiveness in carrying out its operations.
