In a devastating incident that occurred last night, a collision involving three trains in India has resulted in the death of at least 288 people, marking the country’s deadliest railway accident in over two decades.
The incident took place approximately 137 miles (220km) southwest of Kolkata, as two passenger trains derailed and crashed into a stationary freight train on a neighboring track.
The wreckage left a scene of chaos, with rescue teams working tirelessly to extract bodies and rescue survivors from the twisted metal.
Rescuers faced the daunting task of navigating through debris and dismantling wrecked train cars to reach those trapped inside.
The impact of the collision left train compartments mangled and blood-stained, creating harrowing visuals that underscore the magnitude of the disaster.
As efforts to recover victims continue, authorities anticipate that the death toll, currently at 288, may rise to as high as 380.
Sudhanshu Sarangi, director general of Odisha Fire Services, expressed the grim reality of the situation, stating that many of the injured individuals transported to hospitals have tragically succumbed to their injuries.
Despite ongoing rescue operations and the determined efforts of the rescue teams, the recovery process remains arduous.
The accident’s cause is currently under investigation.
P.K. Jena, the top administrative official of the state, reported that approximately 900 people sustained injuries in the collision.
Rescuers tirelessly cut through the wreckage, holding out hope of finding survivors, although the chances of locating anyone alive are slim.
Throughout the night, hundreds were trapped inside severely damaged carriages, awaiting their rescue.
Amitabh Sharma, a spokesperson for the railroad ministry, disclosed that ten to twelve coaches from one train derailed, with debris from the wreckage falling onto an adjacent track.
Tragically, another passenger train traveling in the opposite direction collided with the debris, resulting in the derailment of up to three additional coaches.
Reports indicate that a freight train was also involved in the incident, with some of the derailed passenger coaches colliding with cars from the freight train.
As the night progressed, the death toll steadily climbed, with images capturing the grim aftermath of the accident.
Overturned and shattered train carriages littered the area, while the lifeless bodies of numerous victims, covered in white sheets, lay near the tracks.
