Former Zamfara State governor and current senator representing Zamfara West, Abdulaziz Yari, is currently under investigation by the Department of State Services (DSS).
The exact reasons behind his detention and interrogation remain unclear at this time.
According to a source close to the lawmaker, Yari voluntarily visited the DSS office after the conclusion of the plenary session on Thursday.
The source stated that they accompanied Yari to the DSS office in response to their invitation.
“Senator Yari is presently in the custody of the DSS, but we anticipate his release soon, God willing. He went to their office on his own accord after the plenary session. I accompanied him there, and he has been there ever since,” the source revealed.
However, the source did not disclose the specifics regarding why the security agency extended an invitation to the lawmaker.
Earlier, Peoples Gazette, an online news publication, reported that Yari was arrested by the DSS following a phone call from its director-general, Yusuf Bichi.
The call requested Yari’s immediate presence at the DSS headquarters for an urgent discussion.
When reporters attempted to contact the lawmaker on Saturday, his mobile phone appeared to be switched off.
It is worth noting that Yari had contravened the All Progressives Congress (APC) zoning arrangement when he contested the Senate presidency against the party’s preferred candidate, Senator Godswill Akpabio.
Akpabio emerged as the victor in the election for the president of the upper legislative chamber.
Efforts to obtain official confirmation regarding the detention of the lawmaker from the DSS were unsuccessful, as the mobile phone of its spokesperson, Dr. Peter Afunaya, was unreachable.
