Various Nigerian groups and organizations have expressed opposition to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) led by President Bola Tinubu’s plans for military operations against Niger Republic following the recent coup d’état.
The Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI), Alumni Association of the National Institute (AANI), and Arewa Broadcast Media Practitioners Forum (ABMPF) have all advised against military action, advocating for diplomatic solutions to the crisis.
Legal experts, including human rights activist Femi Falana and constitutional lawyer Sebastine Hon, also emphasized that any military intervention requires approval from the National Assembly and authorization from the UN Security Council. They cautioned against unilateral actions that may lead to severe consequences in the region.
