Northern Nigerian Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) have issued a letter to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, expressing their concerns about the potential consequences of military intervention and economic sanctions on Niger Republic by the ECOWAS.

The CSOs, including Arewa Research and Development Project, Centre for Democratic Development, Research and Training, Jam’iyyar Matan Arewa, and the Joint Action Committee of Northern Youth Associations, emphasized that such actions could bring about severe dangers to Niger Republic and the entire region.

In their letter, the CSOs acknowledged the challenges posed by the political situation in Niger Republic to democracy in West Africa.

However, they argued that the proposed military intervention or economic sanctions might worsen the crisis and lead to further suffering for the innocent people in Niger Republic and the surrounding areas.

They highlighted the need to respect international law, sovereignty, and human rights when considering any form of intervention.

The CSOs urged for a comprehensive approach to conflict prevention and peace-building, with a focus on diplomatic solutions, addressing underlying grievances, strengthening institutions, and promoting respect for human rights.

They urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as the current Chairman of ECOWAS, to intensify mediation efforts and diplomatic engagement with all relevant parties in Niger Republic to find a peaceful resolution to the crisis.

The CSOs emphasized that military intervention and economic sanctions could have detrimental effects on the country and the wider region, impacting regional security and stability.
