In a stark reminder of the security challenges gripping parts of the Federal Capital Territory, gunmen suspected to be kidnappers abducted Nigerian Navy officer Lieutenant Cynthia Akor along with two others from their residence in Mpape late Friday night.

According to sources, the incident unfolded in the suburban district of Mpape, a locale that has witnessed a rising number of kidnappings in recent months. The abductors have reportedly already contacted the families of the victims, demanding a hefty ransom of ₦100 million for their safe release.

A source close to the investigation confirmed, “Among the three people kidnapped on Friday night in Mpape is a DHQ official, Lt. Cynthia Akor. The kidnappers have already contacted their families and are demanding ₦100 million ransom.” Although the FCT Police Command has not yet released an official statement, joint security teams from the Police, Navy, and Defence Headquarters have initiated a manhunt to track down the perpetrators.

The incident, which has raised alarm bells in Abuja, comes at a time when the security situation in the FCT is under intense scrutiny. Both Major General Markus Kangye, Director of Defence Media Operations, and Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Information, have not yet commented on the case, leaving questions about the next steps in the investigation.

Security agencies are reportedly investigating the abduction with urgency, as the operation underscores the broader concerns over safety in areas like Mpape. With the targeted nature of this kidnapping—an officer attached to the Defence Headquarters—the incident is likely to prompt a heightened security response in the Federal Capital Territory.

Authorities continue to search for the missing individuals, and residents of Mpape are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity. As investigations progress, the incident adds to the growing chorus of calls for enhanced security measures in Nigeria’s capital.
