The Abia State Government has launched an emergency response team to provide potable water to residents of Ohanso in Ukwa East Local Government Area, following hydrocarbon contamination of their drinking supply.
The task force, led by the Commissioner for Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Professor Joel Ogbonna, was mandated to find urgent solutions after crude oil was discovered in the community’s groundwater.
Information Commissioner Prince Okey Kanu, who briefed reporters after the weekly State Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti, said the Ministry of Health had been directed to investigate the extent of health risks posed by the contaminated water.
Kanu warned that hydrocarbons posed significant health hazards when ingested but assured that government was committed to immediate intervention. “This remedial action underscores the compassionate governance style of the present administration,” he said.
Professor Ogbonna explained that the contamination came to light after a resident dug a borehole and found crude oil traces. Subsequent checks confirmed that the community’s drinking water was compromised, prompting the government’s intervention and further inquiries.
In a separate development, the council approved mandatory wearing of traditional attire by state officials. Commissioners are to appear in indigenous outfits every first Monday of the month, while civil servants will do the same every Friday.
According to Kanu, the move is aimed at promoting local craftsmanship, strengthening cultural identity, and advancing the state’s ongoing “cultural revolution.”
Meanwhile, the Commissioner disclosed that earthworks had begun at the Abia Industrial and Innovation Park after compensation payments were completed. Regulatory approvals have also been secured by HSI Energies, the firm behind a modular refinery project at the park.
He added that 55 road projects across the state are currently under construction, reconstruction, or maintenance under direct labour.
Commissioner for Transport, Dr. Chimezie Ukaegbu, and the Governor’s media adviser, Ferdinand Ekeoma, also attended the briefing.
