The African Group at the World Trade Organization (WTO) has proposed the re-election of Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as the organization’s director-general. This was announced by Adebayo Thomas, the Director of Press and Public Relations at Nigeria’s Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Investment.

The proposal, presented at the WTO General Council (GC), aims to start the process for Okonjo-Iweala’s reappointment as soon as possible. Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the WTO, Amb. “Members pointed to Okonjo-Iweala’s efforts and qualities, affirming that she deserves reappointment,” Adamu said, adding that nearly 58 members from various regions backed the proposal.

In response, Okonjo-Iweala thanked the members and stated she would soon consult with her family before formally accepting the nomination.
