The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, has asked Nigerians to be patient while the Nigerian Air Force investigates the crash of one of its ATR 42 aircraft in Ondo State. Everyone on board, 25 people in total, died in the accident.
Crash site in Ilaje
The aircraft, identified as NAF 931, came down at Igbokoda, in the Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State. According to a summary of Friday’s national newspaper coverage, Aneke appealed for understanding as investigators work to establish what happened. The reports available do not say what caused the crash, and the service has not publicly offered an explanation.
Recovery efforts under way
On Thursday, the air chief led a group of senior Air Force officers to Igbokoda to join the search and recovery team. Efforts at the accident scene were continuing, with the focus on gathering evidence that could help the inquiry. Such evidence is typically central to any effort to understand how an aircraft was lost, which is why officials are stressing that the process needs time.
Other stories making the rounds
The crash appeared alongside several other developments in the morning press review. Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar criticised the Federal Government’s planned 30-day fuel discount at NNPC stations. In a statement from his media aide, Phrank Shaibu, he called the measure a desperate and temporary gesture that cannot undo the damage caused by high fuel costs. He described the administration’s approach as reckless and scandalous.
Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, for his part, said the government is working to bring inflation down to single digits. He made the remarks while announcing further steps meant to cushion Nigerians against the effects of the global fuel crisis.
What to watch
For now, attention remains on the Ondo crash site, where recovery work is still in progress, and on whether the Air Force will release more details about the victims and the circumstances of the flight. The loss of 25 lives in a single military aviation accident is likely to keep pressure on the service to share the findings of its investigation once they are available. Meanwhile, the debate over fuel prices and the government’s relief measures is set to continue dominating political discussion.
