President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has charged the Chairman and members of the National Assembly Service Commission (NASC) to ensure that the principle of federal character guides all the Commission’s activities.

Akpabio gave the charge when the Chairman and members of the Sixth NASC paid him their maiden visit at his office, where he congratulated them on their appointment and expressed confidence in their capacity to deliver on their mandate.

“The leadership of both chambers made very good choices. I have no doubt that with your pedigrees, you will deliver on the mandate given to you,” he said.

He noted that the Commission’s decisions on staff welfare, promotions and recruitment must reflect national balance and inclusiveness.

“With your various vocations and experiences, I expect that everything about the Commission — including welfare, promotion and recruitment of staff — will be done in a way that reflects fairness, joy and national character,” Akpabio said.

Earlier, the Chairman of the Commission, Dr Saviour Enyiekere, thanked the Senate President and the leadership of the National Assembly for the confidence reposed in the Commission’s members, acknowledging the challenges ahead.

He assured Akpabio that the Commission was committed to meeting its responsibilities, building on the achievements of past administrations and restoring confidence in its ability to effectively discharge its mandate.

Enyiekere also disclosed that the Commission had proposed the establishment of a Council of former Presiding Officers of the National Assembly, as well as the reintroduction and construction of new National Assembly Legislative Quarters.
