Police in Anambra State have arrested Muanaenye Chekwube, a 24-year-old man accused of setting up the kidnapping of his own friend and collecting a ransom of about ₦5.3 million (in U.S. dollars).
The arrest happened on June 26, and was confirmed on Sunday by police spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga. Officers from the Uli division in Onitsha handled the case.
According to the police, Chekwube tricked his friend into following him by saying they were going to visit someone. But it was all a setup. After the kidnapping, he even pretended to be a victim himself to avoid suspicion.
The suspect has reportedly confessed and is now helping the police find the other people involved. He’ll be charged in court once the investigation is finished.
Police have urged the public to stay alert and report anything suspicious, promising they’ll keep working to protect lives and property in the state.
