Lagos State Government, in a joint effort with the Nigerian Port Authority (NPA), has taken decisive action to address environmental degradation in Apapa and its surrounding areas.
The State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has been at the forefront of this ambitious cleanup mission.
LASTMA’s General Manager, Bolaji Oreagba, revealed that the cleanup initiative began shortly after serving notices to the owners of illegal shanties, kiosks, containerized shops, and abandoned trailers in Apapa.
The primary objective is to restore the area’s environmental balance and ensure a cleaner and safer living environment for residents.
Over the weekend, the cleanup efforts kicked off with the demolition of numerous illegal shanties, kiosks, and containerized shops.
Additionally, abandoned trailers were towed away, and illegal garages were dismantled.
The presence of these unauthorized structures posed not only health and safety hazards but also provided a sanctuary for criminals to hide and operate.
The cleanup, set to last seven days, addresses a pressing concern as the area around the Nigerian Port has become a hotbed for miscreants and hoodlums.
These troublemakers routinely extort money from innocent motorists and obstruct the smooth flow of traffic, affecting both residents and businesses in the vicinity.
Mohammed Jamil Khalil, the General Manager of Security at the Nigerian Ports Authority, emphasized that the initiative had been long overdue.
In preparation for the cleanup, the Nigerian Ports Authority had taken proactive measures, including sponsoring radio jingles and public awareness campaigns to encourage cooperation from the public and ensure a successful operation.
During the commencement of the cleanup exercise, multiple government agencies collaborated to tackle the environmental degradation issue holistically.
The Lagos State Ports Command of the Nigeria Police, OPMESA, and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) were among the key players supporting LASTMA’s efforts.
The joint operation seeks not only to restore the environment’s integrity but also to create a lasting positive impact on the lives of those residing and conducting business in Apapa and its environs.
With this proactive approach, the Lagos State Government and its partners demonstrate a commitment to maintaining the beauty and safety of the region for generations to come.
