After eight months of going on strike to press their demands on the federal government, lecturers at the country’s public universities have called off the strike.

The decision, which has not yet been officially communicated to the public, was made at the National Executive Council,NEC, meeting of the lecturers’union held on Friday morning in Abuja under the auspices of Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU.

The strike, however, was suspended conditionally, according to a source at the meeting, which was held at the ASUU national secretariat, which is located on the campus of the University of Abuja.

The meeting, which began Thursday evening, lasted until Friday morning, with all states and zonal branch executive members in attendance.

The union’s meeting was held to review developments, particularly the order of the Court of Appeal, which ordered it to obey an earlier order of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria, NICN, by suspending industrial action until it could appeal the trial court’s decision.

Recall that the union went on strike on February 14,2022, to press its demands on the federal government.

The president of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, is expected to make an official announcement to the public this morning.
