Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State has ordered the suspension of all mining activities in the state until comprehensive data of miners is compiled. The directive came during a meeting with members of the Miners Association of Nigeria, Benue Chapter, in Makurdi.

Governor Alia instructed the Mineral Resources and Environment Management Committee (MIREMCO) to commence immediate documentation of all miners in the state. This decision was prompted by security concerns and reports of water source contamination in areas like Kwande.

Emphasizing the state government’s commitment to protecting lives and property, Governor Alia urged security agencies and the joint task force on illegal mining to enforce regulations effectively.

Commissioner for Justice and Public Order, Mr. Fidelis Mnyim, reiterated the governor’s stance against illegal mining activities. He highlighted the state’s efforts to scrutinize the mining sector using a newly developed checklist.

John Tersugh, Chairman of the Nigeria Miners Association in Benue, pledged cooperation with the government to sanitize the mining sector. The Federal Ministry of Mining and Solid Minerals, represented by Mr. Simon Ogwu, also vowed support for the state’s initiatives.

Miners Benjamin Nyior and Dennis Tarhemba called for a conducive working environment and necessary equipment to enhance their productivity. Some association members appealed to the governor to address issues of multiple taxation and provide essential mining equipment to boost the state’s revenue profile.
