Benin Republic has been thrown into uncertainty as soldiers announced on state television early Sunday that they have dissolved the government and removed President Patrice Talon from office.

The coup plotters, calling themselves the Military Committee for Refoundation (CMR), declared that all state institutions had been suspended. President Talon’s whereabouts remain unknown as of this report.

The French Embassy confirmed reports of gunfire near Camp Guezo, close to the president’s official residence, warning its citizens to stay indoors.

Talon, in office since 2016, was expected to leave office in April after completing his second term.

This development adds to the wave of military takeovers spreading across West Africa.
