Ryan Kelley, a Michigan governor candidate, has been charged with four misdemeanors in connection with the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the United States Capitol.
Kelley was arrested by the FBI Thursday at his home in Allendale, Michigan, and was released without posting bond after his arraignment.
He responded “understood” to the majority of the judge’s questions about his rights and responsibilities. The initial hearing was held in a federal courtroom in Grand Rapids, despite the fact that the charges were filed in Washington, D.C.
According to documents, Kelley was part of a crowd that attempted to disrupt President Biden’s certification as the winner of the November 2020 election. Photos and videos of the insurgency that were posted online are among the evidence.
Kelley is a Republican governor candidate who will be on the August statewide primary ballot. That is not the case for a slew of other Republicans who were accused of submitting false signatures and were removed from the ballot.
Thursday afternoon, a post with the words “Political Prisoner” appeared on Kelley’s campaign Facebook page.
According to the criminal complaint, Kelley knowingly entered and engaged in disorderly conduct in restricted buildings or grounds, as well as committed an act of physical violence against a person or property.
