Tragedy struck during the semi-final match between the Super Eagles of Nigeria and Bafana Bafana of South Africa in the ongoing African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote D’Ivoire. At least four individuals lost their lives during or after the match:

 

1. Dr. Cairo Ojougboh: A chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and former Executive Director of Projects on the Interim Management Committee of Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC). He reportedly suffered a heart attack and died while watching the match at his home in Abuja.

 

2. Ayuba Abdullahi: The Deputy Bursar of Kwara State University Malete. He died after feeling dizzy while watching the match at a viewing center in Sango, Kwara State.

 

3. Samuel (Corps Member): A member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) serving in Adamawa State. He fainted before the final kick during the penalty shootout and died.

 

4. Osondu Nwoye: An Anambra-born businessman based in Cote d’Ivoire. He collapsed inside the stadium while watching the match and died later in the hospital.

 

5. Mikail Osundiji: A sales representative with Nestle, reportedly died from shock after the center referee canceled Nigeria’s second goal against South Africa. He watched the match at a viewing center in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

 

Experts suggest that excitement or grief during sports events can trigger sudden death, especially for individuals with underlying cardiovascular issues. Regular health checks are recommended to detect and manage such conditions. The deaths have prompted condolences from political figures and calls for emergency response preparedness.
