At the 42nd Ordinary Meeting of the ECOWAS Committee of Chiefs of Defence Staff, held at the Defence Headquarters in Abuja, General Christopher Gwabin Musa called on military leaders to actively work against military takeovers and undemocratic changes in government. He emphasized that such coups undermine the core responsibilities of military professionals and have severe economic consequences for the region.

General Musa stated, “Recent military coups in some ECOWAS countries have threatened our democratic values and must be eradicated. As military professionals in democratic nations, we must uphold our democratic values in line with our constitutions.”

He expressed hope that the meeting would bolster efforts to prevent coups and foster peace and development in West Africa. The agenda includes discussing the proposed Air Force Security Support Mission in Sierra Leone, the activation of an Air Force Standby Force Against Terrorism, and developing an Air Force Logistics Depot in Sierra Leone.

Nigeria’s Defence Minister, Mohammed Abubakar Badaru, highlighted the complex security challenges facing West Africa, including terrorism, organized crime, and cross-border threats. He emphasized the need for joint efforts and greater collaboration among ECOWAS member states to address these issues effectively.

Badaru urged the Chiefs of Defence Staff to leverage their collective strengths and expertise to address regional security threats and promote sustainable development.

The meeting reflects a shared commitment to enhancing security and cooperation among West African nations, with a focus on tackling terrorism and other emerging threats.
