The European Union (EU) has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to actively contribute to the establishment of a conducive environment that supports the operations and prosperity of the private sector.

During a press briefing held on Thursday regarding the upcoming Afro-Euro runway event in Abuja, Samuela Isopi, the Head of the European Delegation to Nigeria and the Economic Community of West African States, emphasized the EU’s preparedness to collaborate with Tinubu’s administration to ensure the success of the private sector, particularly in the fashion industry.

Isopi expressed the EU’s intention to work closely with Nigerian institutions in order to bolster the fashion sector, which plays a significant role in job creation.

She stated, “Our primary objective is to assist in fostering an environment where we can genuinely support the sector as a whole, with a focus on textiles due to its significant employment potential. Our role, along with that of our member states, is to provide a platform, while it is the responsibility of the Nigerian private sector and European private companies to capitalize on it.”

Regarding the Afro-Euro runway event scheduled for June 16, Isopi revealed, “We are thrilled to present the inaugural edition of the afro Euro runway fashion show on June 16, 2023. When I first arrived in Nigeria several years ago, I proposed the idea of leveraging fashion to facilitate cultural dialogue. Through our collaborative efforts with our partners, we have successfully organized an extraordinary initiative that brings together a multitude of talents.”

Renowned fashion designer Paolo Sisiano, speaking at the event, commended the seven finalists and urged them to seize the opportunities provided.

He expressed gratitude to the EU for offering this significant platform, stating, “This is a remarkable opportunity for the seven designers participating in the event. It has the potential to propel their careers for the next five years, and they should make the most of it.Nigeria is renowned for its abundant talent and innovative contributions to the fashion industry.”

The EU’s engagement in Nigeria’s private sector development and the support it provides to the fashion industry through initiatives like the Afro-Euro runway reflect its commitment to fostering economic growth and cultural exchange.
