At the FAAN International Women’s Day celebration in Lagos, Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority (FAAN), Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, proposed a mentorship program aimed at advancing the careers of women in the air transport sector. She stressed that excluding women from boardrooms and decision-making roles not only stifles innovation but also undermines overall economic growth.
“Excluding women from the economy means operating our global engine at half power,” Kuku said. “Every lost opportunity—from innovation to talent—is a setback for us all. The challenges we face extend beyond breaking glass ceilings; they include dismantling cycles of violence, discrimination, and marginalisation.”
Supporting this initiative, Mrs. Obiageli Orah, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, urged the industry to raise awareness about the diverse career opportunities available in aviation, noting the increasing presence of women as pilots, engineers, and administrators.
In a related commitment to gender inclusion, Bi-Courtney Aviation Services Limited (BASL), which operates at Murtala Muhammed Airport Terminal Two, pledged to ensure that women occupy key leadership and decision-making roles. The company’s Head of Corporate Communications, Ajoke Yinka-Olawuyi, highlighted their dedication to upholding fair hiring practices, promoting work-life balance, and investing in women’s leadership.
These combined efforts underscore a broader push within the aviation industry to create a more inclusive environment—one where the full spectrum of talent is harnessed to drive progress and innovation.
