The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has sealed five textile warehouses in Kano for allegedly selling underweight and shortened fabric materials to consumers.
The operation, led by the Commission’s Director of Surveillance and Investigation, Boladale Adeyinka, followed weeks of covert monitoring across textile markets in the state.
According to a statement by the FCCPC’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Ondaje Ijagwu, investigations revealed that some distributors were selling fabrics below the standard measurement indicated on product labels while charging full prices.
The agency said the practice violates Sections 123(1) and 125(1) of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (2018), which prohibit deceptive representation of goods in relation to their quantity or pricing.
Brands affected include LGR, U&Me, Nana Tex, V Levintus, Mama Africa, Hightex, UE, S-U Velt and Jisiki. The warehouses were located in Gandun Abada Layout, Ibrahim Taiwo Road, BUA Rice Mills Street, Ajasa Inuwa Wada Road, and Gandun Albasa New Layout in Kano.
FCCPC Chief Executive Officer, Tunji Bello, said the enforcement demonstrates the Commission’s zero-tolerance stance against consumer exploitation and market manipulation.
“By undermining honest traders who comply with lawful standards, this nefarious practice of selling underweight fabrics distorts fair competition and limits consumer choice,” Bello stated.
He added that the FCCPC would strengthen nationwide enforcement to curb similar malpractices and urged traders to ensure that all goods meet declared specifications.
