The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Administration, led by Minister Nyesom Wike, has outlined plans to enhance collaboration with neighbouring states to address the challenge of cross-border crimes. Minister Wike emphasized the critical role of cooperation with Kogi, Nasarawa, Niger, and Kaduna in curbing insecurity within the FCT.

Addressing reporters in Abuja, Wike underscored the necessity of joint efforts to effectively combat criminal activities originating from neighbouring states. He highlighted Niger and Kaduna as primary sources of security concerns for the FCT.

Wike revealed that the FCTA had initiated discussions with the neighbouring states to establish a security coalition, intending to provide mutual support and collectively reduce insecurity levels. Delays due to election petitions had temporarily hindered the coalition’s progress.

With most of the petitions settled, we will be having our first meeting next week. FCT will host the four states to fully implement the cooperation,” Wike announced.

Concerning the specific security challenges, he pointed out that bandits frequently targeted residents in Niger and Kaduna, with the forest areas bordering the FCT being a common escape route for criminals. The minister acknowledged the limitations of permanently stationing security personnel in the forest due to resource constraints.

Wike outlined the upcoming collaboration, indicating a focus on practical measures tailored to each state’s peculiarities. Options include forming a joint security outfit or sharing intelligence while ensuring logistics support and a concerted effort from all involved states.

Emphasizing the proactive stance, Wike expressed optimism that the collaborative approach, combined with ongoing security operations and local support, would contribute to reducing criminal activities and enhancing overall security in the region.
