Many residents across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have criticised the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) over the worsening electricity supply, describing it as “frustrating” and “crippling” to daily life and small businesses.

Residents of Kubwa, Kuje, and Dutse told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday that they barely receive up to five hours of power daily, despite paying full tariffs. They urged AEDC to upgrade its infrastructure and deliver more reliable service.

Mrs. Eniola Williams, a civil servant in Kubwa Phase 2, said the erratic supply in her area had persisted for months.

“In the last three months, we haven’t had power for more than three hours a day. It would even be better if they supply electricity one day on and one day off,” she said. “AEDC needs to improve its infrastructure so we get value for our money.”

Another resident, Mrs. Oluchi Emeka, said many small business owners in Kubwa had been forced to shut down operations.

“Our businesses have collapsed because of the unstable power supply. We don’t get up to five hours of electricity daily,” she lamented.

In Kuje, engineer Emmanuel Ogar described the situation as “unbearable,” noting that the erratic power supply had disrupted basic living conditions.

“We can’t even store food because of poor electricity. AEDC should urgently improve the power situation here — people are suffering,” he said.

Similarly, Emmanuel Ogbomo, a welder in Kuje, said the inconsistent power supply had cost him most of his customers.

“Sometimes we don’t get light for four hours in a day; other days it’s total blackout. My business is suffering and I’m losing money every day,” he said.

In Dutse, fashion designer Dorcas Edet said she had resorted to working at night whenever power was available.

“I often wake up to sew at night because that’s when we usually get light,” she explained.

Residents are calling on AEDC to prioritise investment in power infrastructure and restore steady electricity supply across the FCT.
