Multi-agency security operation to target criminal activity across Abuja and neighbouring states

The Federal Capital Territory Administration has announced the indefinite revival of “Operation Sweep,” deploying a multi-agency security force across Abuja to tackle criminal activity ahead of the Sallah celebrations and the gradual build-up to the 2027 general elections.

The operation brings together personnel from the military, the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and other paramilitary organisations in a coordinated effort aimed at strengthening security across all area councils within the Federal Capital Territory and adjoining states.

Addressing members of the joint task force on Friday, FCT Commissioner of Police Ahmed Sanusi said the operation was targeted strictly at criminal elements and should not be viewed through ethnic, religious or cultural lenses.

“Crime has no tribe, has no religion, and has no culture. It affects each and every one of us. Our mandate is to face criminals and criminality at whatever form and level,” Sanusi said.

He sought to reassure residents that the renewed operation was not intended to intimidate law-abiding citizens but to dismantle criminal networks operating within the territory.

According to the police commissioner, the operation would remain active for as long as necessary, describing its duration as lasting “for as long as the FCT remains,” with the aim of ensuring comprehensive security coverage throughout the capital.

FCTA Director of Security Adamu Gwary said the operation had the full support of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and outlined the administration’s immediate priorities.

These, he said, include providing adequate security during the Sallah festivities expected in the coming weeks, maintaining public order as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 elections, and extending security operations to all parts of the territory without exception.

Gwary described the exercise as a “totality activity” necessary to preserve peace and stability in the nation’s capital during a politically sensitive period.

Authorities also appealed to residents of the FCT, as well as members of the international community, to support the operation by providing credible intelligence that could help security agencies respond more effectively to emerging threats and criminal patterns.
