Werder Bremen defender Felix Agu says his decision to switch international allegiance to Nigeria was driven by a desire to reconnect with his heritage and make a lasting impact on the national team.

Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday at the Super Eagles training camp in London, Agu expressed elation at being officially cleared by FIFA to represent Nigeria in international football. The clearance followed confirmation from the German Football Federation that the 25-year-old had never featured in any competitive matches at senior or youth level for Germany, having only played in two friendlies for their U21 side in 2019.

“It is a great feeling to represent Nigeria, such a big country,” Agu said. “It’s about connecting with my Nigerian roots from my father’s side.”

The Unity Cup call-up marks Agu’s first involvement with the Super Eagles, and the defender has wasted no time integrating into the squad.

“I’ve had two training sessions now, and the welcome has been warm. Great guys, great atmosphere. I’m looking forward to the game,” he said, referencing the upcoming fixture against Ghana, a match he described as being “beyond a friendly” given the historic rivalry between the two nations.
