Residents of Ajebo Road Housing Estate, Kemta, Abeokuta are in mourning following the tragic death of Professor Oladipo Ademuyiwa, a biochemical toxicology expert at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB).
Ademuyiwa, in his early 60s, was hit by a speeding driver while crossing the newly rehabilitated Kemta-Somorin road on Sunday. The driver fled the scene, leaving the professor fatally injured.
In a statement on Tuesday, Dr. Ayo Ajasa, Chairman of the Ajebo Road Housing Estate Community Development Association (CDA), called the accident preventable, blaming the Ogun State government’s failure to install speed breakers despite repeated appeals.
“This tragic loss could have been avoided. We have persistently requested speed breakers on this road, just as they were installed on the Ilugun end,” Ajasa said.
He urged the state government to install speed bumps, lorry barriers, and clear traffic signage to prevent further tragedies.
Adding to the urgency, he revealed that another accident occurred within 24 hours of the professor’s death, further highlighting the dangers of the road.
“We hold the government accountable and demand immediate intervention before more lives are lost,” he added.
Residents are also calling for stricter law enforcement to curb reckless driving in the estate.
