Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim apologised to supporters after his side crashed out of the League Cup in a humiliating defeat to fourth-tier Grimsby Town on Wednesday night.
United fought back from 2-0 down, with captain Harry Maguire heading home an 89th-minute equaliser to force penalties after a lacklustre display at Blundell Park. But a dramatic shootout ended 12-11 in Grimsby’s favour when Bryan Mbeumo struck the bar with United’s final kick.
Grimsby, who were dominant in spells, outplayed and outfought their Premier League visitors to secure a famous victory.
“The players spoke really loud today about what they want,” Amorim said, suggesting a lack of desire in his squad. “Everything. The way we started, we were not even here. Everything is so important in this club. We should do so much better. I just have to say sorry to our fans.”
Amorim admitted his side lacked urgency and intensity, describing the performance as “the limit,” and conceded that expectations could not be fixed in a single transfer window.
“It doesn’t matter that we lost on penalties. Football was fair today. The best team won,” he added. “I would like to say very smart things and important things. I have nothing to say. That’s the biggest problem too. Seeing the same mistakes and having nothing to say. I’m really sorry for our fans.”
The Portuguese coach, under increasing pressure since taking over last season, said he would reflect during the upcoming international break as scrutiny mounts over his position.
Goalkeeper Andre Onana, back in the starting XI, was culpable for both Grimsby goals — beaten at his near post for the first and failing to deal with a cross that led to Tyrell Warren’s second. But Amorim refused to single him out.
“With all due respect, this is a fourth-division team. It’s not about Andre. It’s more than that,” he said.
United, now out of the League Cup, must turn their focus to the FA Cup if they are to salvage their season with silverware.
