The North Central Renaissance Movement (NCRM) has called on Nigeria’s major political parties to zone their presidential tickets to the North Central region ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a communiqué issued after its meeting in Abuja, signed by chairperson Prof. K’tso Nghargbu, the group argued that the region has never produced a civilian president or vice-president since independence despite its longstanding contributions to the country’s unity and development.

“We will no longer accompany other zones as escorts, backbenchers, spectators, or political underdogs to the glorious location called Nigeria,” the communiqué stated. “Being the only geopolitical zone that has never produced a civilian President or Vice-President since Independence, the time for North Central to lead the country is now.”

The group cited the zone’s role in hosting the Federal Capital Territory, powering the national grid through hydroelectric dams, and sustaining agriculture and mining as evidence of its strategic importance.

It also emphasised the region’s ethnic and cultural diversity—home to Hausa/Fulani, Yoruba, Igbo, and many indigenous groups—as a basis for promoting inclusivity and tolerance in national leadership.

Rejecting what it described as “tokenistic gestures” such as party chairmanship or other secondary offices, the NCRM insisted that only the presidency would satisfy its demand for fairness and equity.

The movement further referenced the North Central’s loyalty during the Nigerian Civil War as proof of its commitment to national unity, urging Nigerians across all regions to support its push.

“Granting the North Central zone the presidency would not only strengthen national cohesion but also signal a commitment to fairness and inclusivity across the federation,” it added.
