Tragedy struck in Umunze, a town in Orumba South local government area of Anambra State, as unknown gunmen attacked a police checkpoint and killed three officers on duty.

According to eyewitnesses, the gunmen arrived at the Nsogwu area of the town and opened fire on the policemen.

The officers attempted to escape, but the attackers pursued them, shot them, and took their guns and uniforms before fleeing the scene in a waiting car.

Residents of the area are now living in fear as the security situation in the town has become precarious.

The Anambra State Police Command has condemned the incident and promised to bring the perpetrators to justice.

In a statement, the Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Tochukwu Ikenga, described the incident as unfortunate and part of the risk security officers face in serving the nation.

He assured the public that the command has deployed reinforcement teams to the area and intensified joint security patrols to track down the assailants.

This latest incident highlights the growing security challenges in the region and the need for authorities to take urgent steps to improve security in the state.

The government must work closely with security agencies to stem the tide of violent crimes and restore peace to the affected communities.
