On Tuesday, the House of Representatives approved a bill to amend the National Minimum Wage Act, No. 8, 2019, increasing the national minimum wage to 70,000 Naira. The bill also reduces the periodic review interval from five years to three years. This decision follows a letter from President Tinubu, urging lawmakers to expedite the bill’s passage for the benefit of Nigerian workers.
President Tinubu’s letter, read by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, emphasized the importance of swift implementation. The amendment changes section 3(1) of the Principal Act, substituting the figure “N30,000” with “N70,000,” and section 3(4), changing “five years” to “three years.”
Additionally, the House passed a bill allowing the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to remain in office for the duration specified in their appointment letter. This amendment aligns with section 58 of the 1999 Constitution. The Nigeria Police Act, 2020, is amended by adding subsection 18(8A), ensuring that the IGP serves their full term as stipulated in their appointment letter.
The passage of these bills reflects the House’s commitment to addressing workers’ welfare and ensuring stability in police leadership.
