The American Military Veterans of Igbo Descent (AVID) have reached out to new British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, seeking his intervention in the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and a British citizen, who they claim is being “illegally detained.”

In a letter dated July 19, AVID congratulated Starmer on his recent election victory and highlighted Kanu’s plight following his controversial extradition from Kenya in 2021. Signed by Dr. Sylvester Onyia and Dr. Godson Obiagwu, AVID’s President and Secretary, the letter urged Starmer to pressure Nigerian authorities to release Kanu, whose health is reportedly deteriorating.

The letter emphasized Kanu’s need for adequate medical care and noted the violation of court orders regarding his detention. AVID, a non-political organization of US military veterans of Igbo descent, stressed their support for democratic processes and the right to peaceful calls for referendums.

They concluded by urging the British PM to review Kanu’s case and secure his release from what they described as inhumane conditions.
