The Imo State chapter of the Labour Party (LP) has been sealed by the police, according to a statement issued by the national secretary of the LP, Umar Farouk, on Monday.

Farouk expressed shock at the invasion and occupation of the secretariat in Owerri, which he described as an illegal action.

The police reportedly claimed the closure was due to a court order, but Farouk disputed this, stating that no such order had been presented to the LP.

He also noted that the police had informed the party that it had not deployed any of its officers to the secretariat. Farouk called on party members to remain calm in the face of the provocation.

This is not the first time the secretariat has been occupied, with a similar invasion occurring on March 15, 2023.

The LP has contacted the office of the Inspector General of Police for further information on the situation.
