Italy has urged the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to extend the timeframe for the military junta in Niger to restore democratic order. Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani made this call in an interview on Monday, as reported by the News Agency of Nigeria.

Tajani emphasized the need for a diplomatic approach and expressed hope that the expired ultimatum by ECOWAS, which occurred at midnight the previous night, would be extended. Coup leaders in Niger have temporarily closed its airspace amid concerns of potential military intervention from the West African regional group.

Italy’s request for an extension comes as the coup leaders have not met the deadline for the restoration of President Mohammed Bazoum, who remains detained.
