The Kogi State Police Command has launched a statewide enforcement operation targeting vehicles with covered, obscured, defaced, invalid, unauthorised or missing registration number plates as part of efforts to strengthen security and combat crime.

The exercise, which commenced on Monday, follows a directive from the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, aimed at preventing the use of unidentifiable vehicles for criminal activities.

Kogi State Commissioner of Police, Naziru Bello Kankarofi, directed Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers and Motor Traffic Police personnel to enforce the order across the state.

According to the command, vehicles found violating the regulations will be impounded and investigated in line with existing laws.

In a statement issued on Monday by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat, the command described the operation as a proactive security measure designed to improve vehicle identification, support crime prevention and enhance security operations.

Motorists, transport operators and fleet owners were advised to ensure their vehicles display valid and clearly visible registration plates at all times and that all relevant documents are up to date and available for inspection.

“The exercise is aimed at strengthening public safety by denying criminal elements the use of unidentifiable vehicles for criminal activities,” the statement said.

The command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property and urged residents to cooperate with officers conducting the exercise.

It also called on members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious persons, vehicles or activities through the nearest police station or established emergency channels.
