The Lagos State Government unveils its vision for the Lagos Island Model City Plan, aiming to revitalize the historic area and unleash economic growth. Dr. Oluyinka Olumide, Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, outlined the plan’s objectives during a Stakeholders Meeting held at the Muson Centre.
Dr. Olumide emphasized the administration’s commitment to developing an inclusive plan that harnesses the unique attributes of Lagos Island while addressing citizens’ aspirations. The plan aims to transform Lagos Island into a premier commercial, industrial, and cultural hub in West Africa over the next two decades.
The consultation process involved various stakeholders, ensuring broad input and participation in shaping the future of Lagos Island. Draft proposals were publicly displayed and presented to relevant agencies and interest groups, including the Isale Eko Descendants Union.
Chairman House Committee on Physical Planning and Urban Development, Sylvester Ogunkelu, urged Lagos Island indigenes to support the enactment of the Model City Plan, which promises to rejuvenate the island’s environment.
Dr. Olajide Babatunde, Special Adviser on e-GIS and Urban Development, highlighted the dynamic nature of urban planning, emphasizing the need for forward-looking strategies.
The consultant team, led by project manager Mr. Salim Eid, presented the Draft Final Lagos Island Model City Plan, addressing key thematic areas such as flood protection, housing, heritage preservation, and transportation.
Lagos Island representatives, including Oyinlomo Danmole, Erelu Abiola Dosunmu, Prince Abiola Kosoko, Engr. Hakeem Gbajabiamila, and Tpl. Lookman Oshodi, emphasized the importance of integrating cultural heritage into the plan while avoiding gentrification.
Additional speakers at the event included Member of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Olanrewaju Afinni, General Manager of Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), Arc. Gbolahan Oki, and Managing Director of Lagos State Development and Property Corporation (LSDPC), Ayo Joseph.
Notable attendees also included Lagos WhiteCap Chiefs, Permanent Secretary of the Office of Physical Planning, Engr. Oluwole Sotire, and former Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Tpl. Toyin Ayinde.
