Argentine President Javier Milei has launched a fierce attack on the United Nations, calling the organisation “useless” and accusing its officials of failing to uphold global security and human rights.
Speaking at the UN General Assembly on Wednesday, Milei said the world body had failed in its core responsibilities while allowing “chaos, violence and international terrorism” to spread.
The Argentine leader, a close ally of US President Donald Trump, accused the UN of becoming an institution that serves bureaucrats rather than addressing global crises.
“The UN has become a useless organization, serving only to feed a caste of fatally arrogant parasites disguised as well-intentioned bureaucrats,” Milei said.
He also criticised the organisation’s handling of Argentina’s long-running claim to the Falkland Islands, known in Argentina as Las Malvinas and administered by Britain.
Argentina has accused the UK of violating a UN resolution by taking unilateral action concerning the islands, over which the two countries fought a war in 1982.
“Those who follow the rules receive no reward for doing so, while those who break them face no repercussions whatsoever,” Milei said.
His remarks continued a pattern of criticism of multilateral institutions and what he has described as the UN’s ideological agenda.
The speech came as Argentina and the United States announced a joint initiative aimed at improving Argentina’s infrastructure and connecting key economic sectors with major Atlantic ports and Western markets.
The proposed Andes-Atlantic Corridor is intended to encourage investment in transport, digital infrastructure, minerals and energy, including the Vaca Muerta shale formation in southern Argentina, according to a joint statement.
The initiative further underscored the close relationship between Milei’s government and the Trump administration as Argentina seeks greater investment and integration with Western markets.
