During the 6th extraordinary session of the AMCOW Board of Directors Executive Committee, held via videoconference on Monday, Morocco assumed the vice-presidency for the North African region for the 2025-2027 term. Morocco’s Minister of Equipment and Water, Nizar Baraka, congratulated Egypt, the outgoing AMCOW President, on its achievements and extended best wishes to Senegal, which is set to take over the presidency in the next term.

Baraka also expressed gratitude to Mauritania, the outgoing Vice-President for North Africa, for its efforts in addressing the region’s significant water stress challenges. “The Kingdom of Morocco is committed to furthering these efforts and developing actions to meet these challenges,” he stated.

Emphasizing that cooperation with African countries remains a cornerstone of Morocco’s foreign policy, Baraka highlighted the increasing importance of the water sector amid the impacts of climate change. He affirmed Morocco’s willingness to share its extensive experience and best practices in water management while learning from other successful African initiatives.

In a call for long-term solutions, Baraka stressed the need to formulate a post-2025 African Water Vision that tackles the continent’s critical water issues. To advance this agenda, Morocco will host the next regional technical consultations dedicated to preparing the Africa Water Vision beyond 2025 for North Africa.

This strategic move underscores the urgency for a coordinated and sustainable response to water challenges in the region, reinforcing the role of AMCOW in shaping Africa’s water future.
