The governments of Kaduna, Zamfara, Kogi, and other states are planning to take legal action against the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), and Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele.

The action is due to their refusal to implement a Supreme Court judgement on the controversial naira redesign policy.

The Supreme Court had extended the validity of the old naira notes until December 31st, but the silence of President Muhammadu Buhari on the judgement had led to the rejection of the remaining old N1,000 and N500 notes as legal tender.

Some banks had started paying customers the old notes, but by Wednesday, the CBN insisted that it had not given any directive to that effect.

The enrolled order and Certified True Copy of the Supreme Court judgement were served on the AGF on Friday afternoon. Abdulhakeem Mustapha (SAN), counsel for Kaduna, Kogi, and Zamfara states, stated that he expected immediate compliance with the judgement and that committal proceedings against the AGF and CBN Governor would commence if there was no compliance.

When the Supreme Court talks, it is compulsory for all government representatives to comply with its order.
