Operation follows complaint from university authorities over rising drug activity

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested six suspects and seized quantities of illicit substances during a targeted operation in Kano State.

The raid, carried out by the agency’s Kano Strategic Command, focused on identified drug hotspots around Bayero University Kano, particularly within the Old Campus area. It formed part of an ongoing enforcement drive codenamed “Operation Sharar Mafaka.”

Commandant Dahiru Yahaya-Lawal disclosed the development in a statement issued on Monday through the command’s Public Relations Officer, Sadiq Muhammad-Maigatari.

According to the agency, the operation was prompted by a formal complaint from the university management regarding increasing drug-related activities within and around the institution.

“The suspects were apprehended for trespassing and engaging in the sale and consumption of illicit substances within and around the university premises,” Yahaya-Lawal said.

He added that items linked to the illegal activities were confiscated and destroyed to prevent further circulation.

The commander said the exercise underscores the agency’s determination to create a safe and drug-free environment for students, staff and nearby residents.

“We will not relent in our efforts to dislodge all drug joints under Operation Sharar Mafaka,” he said.

Yahaya-Lawal also attributed the success of the operation to close collaboration with university authorities, noting that timely intelligence enabled a swift response.

He warned that the agency would not tolerate the use of educational or public facilities for drug-related activities and urged members of the public to continue providing information that could aid efforts to combat drug abuse and trafficking in the state.
