Nigeria’s government has hit back at allegations of human rights abuse made by the UK’s Trade Union Congress, branding the claims “unfounded” and “misinformed”.

In a strongly-worded statement, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy Bayo Onanuga insisted that the accusations were based on a “misunderstanding of the situation”.

The row erupted after TUC leader Joe Ajaero was stopped from traveling abroad following his refusal to cooperate with a law enforcement agency investigating his activities.

Ajaero had been due to speak at the TUC conference in London, where the UK TUC leader launched a scathing attack on Nigeria’s human rights record.

But Onanuga said the government would not be swayed by “ideological positions” that stifle economic growth and development.

GOVERNMENT’S COMMUNICATION STRATEGY TAKES A MORE ASSERTIVE TONE

The robust response is in line with the government’s communication strategy under Bayo Onanuga, who has been Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy for some time.

Onanuga’s direct and assertive communication style has been evident in recent statements, including this latest response to the UK TUC.

The government’s more forceful approach may be an attempt to project a stronger image and counter criticism more effectively. However, it remains to be seen how this approach will be received by the public and the international community.
