The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has issued a warning, alerting customers that they must update their prepaid meters to continue using card recharges from next year.
The NERC has advised Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) to assist customers in this process, which will be provided free of charge. Customers are required to approach their power Distribution Companies (Discos) for guidance on updating their meters.
According to the NERC’s announcement on its Twitter handle, the update is necessary before November 2024 to ensure uninterrupted service. It emphasized that this update will not affect the meter units or alter the normal pace of meter operation. NERC assured consumers that two free Key Change Tokens (KCTs) will be issued by the Discos to facilitate the meter update.
In response to concerns, NERC clarified that the update will neither impact the units stored in the meter nor cause the meter to operate at a faster rate than usual. The Commission encourages customers to contact their respective Discos for further information regarding the meter update process.
